Fred Hemmings is a Hawaiian waterman, renowned outrigger canoe steersman and international surfing champion who won the World Surfing Championships in 1968. He retired from competitive surfing and inaugurated the world’s first major professional surfing events, including the Pipe Masters. In 1976 he cofounded International Professional Surfing, the world’s first pro surf tour. From 1984 to 1990, Hemmings was a Republican leader in the Hawai‘i state House of Representatives. In 2000 he was elected to the state senate, where he served as a senate leader. A father and grandfather, he currently lives in Kailua, O‘ahu. Hemmings is a keynote speaker specializing in Hawai’i, surfing and tales of Duke Kahanamoku.
